Please TRY and help

Hi, I don't even know if this is possible, but I figured you would know if anyone....

I have a pair of monitors that I want to link up to my computer, but it only has a single out. This still produces a stereo picture for the computer speakers, so I'm trying to get it to work for my monitors. They plug in with a 1/8 jack each, so I bought a Y-lead:

Monitor 1 ------>
>---------------: Computer
Monitor 2 ------>

The problem is, both monitors are trying to produce a stereo picture, so I get the same thing out of each speaker. Nothing is missing, just compressed into the confined mono space. There are two wires leading to each speaker of the female ports on the Y-lead, so I assume it is meant for two headphones or something. Is there anyway on the computer I can get it to split the sound? Thanks!
 
1/8" plugs also come in Tip Ring Sleave 'stereo' versions.
 
It's not clear what you have. It reads like you have some computor speakers that do work in stereo(?), so the card-out must be also. (So far ok?) If it's on a 1/8" plug then it has to be a TRS to get stereo. A typical 'Y' is just a mono spliter, not 2 chanels.
 
No the computer speakers and soundcard are both stereo
