I'd like to think I am able to learn the computer recording thing. Is there a publication, or link, that ABSOLUTELY spells it out for beginners- in an EASY TO READ fashion? Some of the terms you guys use are "common", but I'm in the DARK.

If anyone has a little extra time, I'll list what I have, and you might suggest what YOU would get, if in my shoes. I want to be able to record/playback at least 16 tracks- prefer 24 tracks. I pretty much record alone. Guitar oriented- Acoustic and Electric. Drum machine, live drums- of course live percussion.
I have:
1 Aphex 207 2-channel tube mic preamp.
1 Tube MP mic preamp.
1 Lexicon mp200 reverb
1 Tascam 6-input board (yes, portastudio) i assume i need a better one?? wouldn't use over 5 inputs at once though.
Plenty of mics.


As far as a computer, I'd get a new one. Which one? I guess the next issue is this: is there just one program that "does it all?" This has been VERY confusing to me. And the "soundcard thing", that too is very confusing.

Well as for pc recording, you can buy:
-Digital Home Recording by Carolyn Keating
-Home Recording Power by Ben Milstead
These are available at Amazon. Non of these can teach you everything about PC recording but they'll give you an overview. Also check in Amazon in Books/Recording or music recording and you can find hundreds of books. Also read a lot from this forum, browse through present an past threads and ask questions, don't be afraid to ask. We are a tight community here an

You do not need XP Pro unless you have a dual CPU system or need its advanced networking feaures.

I stared off working with a XP Pro system and then switched to Home on the PC I recently purchased. There are no differences whatsoever between the two (except for what I mentioned above), especially when using DAW apps. Home is also $100 less.
 
Herein lies my problem. The terminology you guys (gals?) are using is "out of my league." No fault of yours, I appreciate your responses.

I'll try to find those publications Alonzo mentioned.
