at least get a M-Audio audiophile 24/96 for about $100. That is much better than a stock soundcard......

Actually, my own advice is a little bit in the other direction. I'd prefer they get a decent 4 track analog and learn the basics of recording and mixing before they step into the pc pool. I can count about 15-20 questions on how to hook up the mixer to the soundcard, hooking up mics to the soundcard, hooking up guitars to the soundcard, hooking up the soundcard to their cat's ass to record farts everyday. And don't get me started on the "I can't hear anything coming out of my monitors questions. I don't see too many questions from Tascam Porta 02 owners asking how to hook up their mic to record their acoustic guitar, or how to bounce down tracks... It seems to me that pc recording seems so seductive that people are jumping into it without realizing what they are getting into, let alone how to do it...regebro said:
