Please spend some money on a decent soundcard! Their are so many people that have soundblaster cards or 1/8" stock cards and want to do multitracking  at least get a M-Audio audiophile 24/96 for about $100. That is much better than a stock soundcard...... :D

End of Rant

For many people, even the stock soundcard is a waste of money. :)

I'm with you! This thread needs STICKY status!!!

Even though I only have a stock soundcard :o

But I track on a Fostex MR-8, so it's not needed.... :)

What there should be is a sticky encouraging the use of the SEARCH FUNCTION!

You have my vote on that. Let's see if we can get someone to do that. I'll gladly start the thread... ;)

A sticky F.A.Q thread at the top of the newbie forum would be excellent.

I wouldn't mind putting something together but I think my own level of experience would make this a bit innappropriate.

Maybe compiling one from previous posts?

I'll think about it and maybe PM Dragon.

Thanks Guy's for feeling my pain! MAKE THIS A STICKY!!!!!!! :D

Maybe if we work together, we can all compile it from the different forums, and then submit it to Dragon as an FAQ sticky?

Copying the link to the mic sticky is a good start.
I am going to start gathering some of the most asked questions and the most frequently used replies. I'll PM you when I get a good chunk of it, and we can compare notes....

Crap! I am too damn busy with the collab to work on this... but it's next on my list....

Actually, my recommendation i sthe complete oppoite: Do NOT spend any money on a decent soundcard. Not until you...
1. ...are certain you want to spend money on your homewrecking...
2. ...have bought a decent set of monitors!

i bought my soundcard before i bought the monitors. it was a doozy hooking them things up to my pc speakers

Actually, my own advice is a little bit in the other direction. I'd prefer they get a decent 4 track analog and learn the basics of recording and mixing before they step into the pc pool. I can count about 15-20 questions on how to hook up the mixer to the soundcard, hooking up mics to the soundcard, hooking up guitars to the soundcard, hooking up the soundcard to their cat's ass to record farts everyday. And don't get me started on the "I can't hear anything coming out of my monitors questions. I don't see too many questions from Tascam Porta 02 owners asking how to hook up their mic to record their acoustic guitar, or how to bounce down tracks... It seems to me that pc recording seems so seductive that people are jumping into it without realizing what they are getting into, let alone how to do it...

The number one question:

"Hey guys, I'm new to the board. I want to record myself and acoustic guitars so that I can burn a CD to show to friends and what not, but I don't have a clue what I am doing. I have been reading everything on this board for a couple weeks now, but it's so overwhelming. Can one of you great people tell me what I need to get started?"

Sound familiar????
