Excuse my ignorance, but what implement do I need to continuously repeat a guitar or keyboard pattern?

Any loop editor would do it, like Acid, Fruity Loops, etc.

A splicing block of the appropriate width, a nice sharp (demagnetised) razor blade and some editing tape (again, of the appropriate width).

;)

I should have added, I'm using a Fostex digital portastudio, so no tape.

Or an outboard sampler with continuous loop function such as the Boss SP202. You can now get a used one for 'bout $90.

I know. I was just funnin' ya (hence the wink).

Is there a copy and paste function?

I never realised those faces meant anything. There is a cut and paste, but I'm talking about a two-bar riff.

Jon, put the two bar guitar riff in to your multtracking software and then highlight it with the cursor. Then go to the edit window and check the loop selection. Press play, and this will make it play forever. If you want this to occur throughout the song then record the looped guitar into your Fostex for as long you you need. Then import that track back into the computer and you can edit it to your hearts content. That will save you from having to paste and sync it to the track, which can take hours to do. Right off the top of my head this is the best I can come up with, although it may not be what you want. If this is the case, then give us some more detail as to what you are trying to do.
