Hey guys.
I want to buy a laptop for portable recording. Right now I am looking at a Dell 5160 with a pentium 4 (3.06GHz). 1GB memory, 80Gb Hard drive, 8X CD/DVD burner. For about $1500.00. It seems good with my budget. Would you think that this is a good enough system since it will replace my desktop (my brother wants it) or would you recommend another type of laptop. Your input is greatly appreciated guys.
Thanks.

I'd go with an HP business class laptop of some sort. Their support is outstanding, and the laptops are quite nice, especially for the money.

Which laptop you get is actually less important than purchasing from a firm that is going to be there for you when (not if) it breaks. Generally I hate Dell... not because they are cheap (all large PC OEMs, incl. Alienware, cut corners where they shouldn't), but because they have gobbled so much of the market. However, when it comes to laptops I would recommend buying from Dell simply because they offer what I feel is the best support. Note though that you MUST budget for support, it is not free.

The ONLY support plan you want is total replacement if it breaks. Overnight is best, but the important feature is total replacement for as many years as you want to keep the thing. Don't buy two years if you intend to keep it for three.

Do not have the illusion that it will not break. You may be blessed with luck and see no problems for as long as you own it, but if you are that kind of person your money if far better invested at your local casino or in the Lottery.

Luck.
