Ok so i just sold my motu 896 because of all the problems it was giving me with chipsets.. etc.. In favour of an edirol fa-101 which i had previously owned adn worked great. .so i thought.. why not. I have been wrestling with the unit all night.. The sound is very crackily and very choppy... as if the buffer settings were to low .. i set the buffer settings to maximum and this clears things up about 90% but my computer is an athlon 64 X2 with a gig of ram.. so i doubt that a crappy computer is causing the probs.. seems like whenever i do something that requires any cpu is cuts out or gets worse.. anyone have any ideas at all? thanks for any help you can give.

Did you completely remove the drivers from your MOTU. If there are remnants of those drivers there, then that could cause major problems. Two different Audio Interfaces typically don't play nice in the same system.

HAHA figured it out! 5 hours of working and it was the stupidest thing! I have onboard firewire but i also had a pci firewire card sitting around... had been trying with that one for the past little while.. ended up moving it up pci slot and it works! always the stupidest thing.. do you know if having pci firewire is signifcantly limiting to your speed compared to onboard?

It should be the same either way, because the PCI bus is capable of transfering Data faster than Firewire anyways. I would think onboard would have more trouble since it might have to share resources with several other things.
