Hi Everyone,

I need help and I'm not sure if my set up is right. This is what I am working with.
Sony Vaio
Windows 7, i7 processor, CPU Q720 @ 1.60Ghz, 64-bit OS, 6.0 Ram
Audio-Technica ATH - M20 headphones & AKG Perception 120 Condensor Mic

I am trying to record vocals on to a backing track. When I open a New Project and Add a New Track
a screen pops up saying that my input/output isn't "mapped" or something of that sort. I checked my driver and I am using Alpha Asio and it says it's working properly. I am able to import the backing track but when i try to record vocals on to the backing track it does not pick up the vocals... When im not recording I am able to monitor the microphone and hear it as well...Does anyone know why this is happening? Is it easier to work with Audition Cs6 or Audacity?

Are you using an interface? Does your software know where to expect your vocals to come from?

+1.

OP, you have carefully listed the rest of your kit and so, like Armistice I also think you are sans AI! This is doubly odd since I think Cubase LE5 only comes bundled with hardware. NB! I am NOT suggesting any Jolly Roger scenario here! I have LE5 that came with a second hand Tascam US 144* and I shall still have it when the AI gets sold on.

I say I HAVE LE5 but I rarely use it, Samplitude is my go-to software, but I could walk you thru' some of C's parameters and settings, just gimme an hour or two!

*And didn't I have a trial with Steinberg getting it activated! Clearly the original owner had given up since there was the free period still to run but Steinies are NOT the most helpful of people (you would have thought Yamaha would have kicked butt a bit?)seems to be a "Continental" thing? Magix .de are the same. Intransigent, To The Book Byzanites. Reaper people and Sonar, super folk!

Dave.

+1 about registering cubase (not the easiest test for a newb, i had to do it!!)

for the OP the set up page for LE4 in the cubase section (in this forum!)is the same for LE5 i think!

Well it sounds like you have the Alpha selected in Cubase, but let's make sure.

Install Alpha driver 2.7 from HERE

In Cubase; Devices>Device Setup...>VST Audio System>select the Alpha driver from drop down menu. Check that 'Release Driver' box while you are there.

Now, go to Devices>VST Connections (F4), and create a mono Input bus.

Back to project window. Project>Add Track>Audio>Add track (mono).

Now, in the Inspector window, far left of screen, select the mono bus input you created. Arm the track, and make sure to toggle on the monitor button (looks like the side view of a speaker). This will allow you to hear the input while recording. It must be toggled off to hear playback. There is a setting in preferences to make this toggle itself when recording. File>Preferences...>VST>in Auto Monitoring drop menu, select Tapemachine Style.

See if this gets you going. :)

Hi,
Thank you, it's pretty late where i am, but i will try this tomorrow once more..i might have found where i went wrong with what i read from ur thread..on the vst systems link.i had to switch drivers to alpha asio, then underneath was where i wasn't sure if i was to a"check" the box that says release driver wen app runs...ill post if t works! Thanks again;)

The 'Release Driver' checkbox, only allows Windows to access the interface while Cubase is open. It won't change your issue. I am guessing it is the monitor button, and or VST Connections that are screwing you up.

Let me know what you figure out. :)

Hey there jiff,
Thank you!:) ill read up on it..and yes you are right about it not being nb friendly..when i first got my recording stuff..i had no clue what anything meant. I looked at the interface and ands aid to myself: "oh now this shouldn't be hard to learn" and here i am now, 3wks later frustrated
I felt like stabbing myself..lol jk;) i took 2wks off from work coz i was so excited to record..Failed!:(

Well, you did the right thing by coming here. Steinberg support leaves much to be desired. We will get you running. :)

Hi Jimmy,
It's frustrating, and please excuse my grammar and puncOuation is off because English is my second language..Ok now, I remember the manual saying that the monitor button shouldn't be lit...only the recording button and the inspector button..on the inspector window stereo in -right for mic...stereo in -left for instruments. I had to learn this by rereading the manual 50x because i didn't know a single recording vocabulary..im starting from scratch, zero, nothing, nada..lol i was able to pick up a recording of my vocals but, it was super low...the waves on my recorfing window were almost a straight line..during recording and monitoring i can hear myself really loud, but when i play back...oh man i need to have bionic ears to hear it..my cellphone is dying n so is my engine..im excited to hear back from all...goodnight!
