I have recently purchased a mackie 24 channel mixing board and I also own a pretty good rack of outboard fx, comps, preamps, finalizer etc., Yet instead of going the standard DAT route I really want to find a way to record to a harddrive so I can take advantage of the editing features that programs like Cool Edit
have to offer, but I want to be able to use all of my outboard gear (fx etc) in conjunction with the HD based system. Can this be done? What PC hardware would I need besides the computer? I know I need to have channels in as well as channels out but thats all I know....

You would need a "breakout box"that has as many individual inputs and/or outputs as the number of devices you want to combine with your software, plus some type of mixer screen on the monitor.I'm not an expert here, but I know that Midiman and Echo and MOTU all make this type of hardware.Cheers!

that is what i do. i have a mackie 1642 and a roland vs 880. i use the 880 like a adat. then i can dump the whole mix on my harddrive or track by track. if i go track by track i have to go into the computer to "line all the tracks back up" so they are in sync. yes it takes longer but this gives me total freedom to edit each channell more.
i would like to get a plug in that has ins and outs but for now i use a sound blaster live sound card and i go from my headphone out into the direct in. you can also use the digital in and outs. i cam also burn cd's. sounds really nice
