please help newb. w/ midi

ok i am just now getting into midi becasue i grew tired of fruity loops
i bought a yamaha s03 music synth for midi
and i am using an audiophile soundcard

i have no clue how midi is supposed to work
in cubase i hit the keys and the diagram of the piano
on the right hits keys to corrospond,

excuse my ignorance but is this all thats supposed to happen? i seemed to think the notes would appear on the layout as i hit them
if this is way off im sorry but im new to this shit
and i cant seem to find in the .pdf explaining this to me
in laymen terms

any help would be great

Cubase should be recording the midi notes and playing them back through your yamaha. You will still need audio cables hooked up and if you want to record the audio you will need to route your audio cables to the soundcard audio input.
