Please help me

I'm about to start up my own small recording studio at home. I've been saving up for ages and now is the time. What are the suggestions from you guys? I have a pwerful enough laptop. I have a Line 6 Flextone II Plus, which has the outputs and is designed specifically for computer/recording. What should I start with, as far as programs/mixers/8/10/12 tracks...?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, I tested out the Korg D-12 today, and it was awesome. Any input on that?
 
This is the dreaded "it depends" answer. It depends on;
what kind of recording do you want to do? (just demo stuff for your on consumption or do you want to try to release it?)
Is it just you recording a track or two at a time or a full band (full drum kit with lots of mics on it, bass all at the same time)?
How much cash do you want to spend?
WARNING!! Once you start down this road it's like doing heroine. It'll deplete your bank account and ruin relationships. God, I love it.:D
 
Isn't it great? At first, it's going to be more on a personal level, but eventually, I will want to release it. I will do full bass/drum/guitar/keyboard mixes on it, so I will need at least 8 tracks. I play mostly instrumental/prog type music, but who knows?
 
Well...from what you've told me, I guess you could get by with a digital 8 track, or even analog...Don't know what you should do about mixers, since I don't know how complex you want each individual part to be (fine tuned and whatnot). But for the time being I guess you could use an 8 track mixer/recorder combo (Maybe that Yamaha MiniDisc recorder? It has that analog style mixing section) to lay down some decent tracks.

I use a 2408mkII with a couple of ADATs and it works well for me. The 828 hooks up with Firewire so it would work with a laptop pretty easily.
 
I intend to do start on a similar project. Until now the most interesting product that can be hooked up onto a laptop seems to be the Muto 828. But you should also check out the Maudio audiosport quattro and the emagic emi1/6. There is also a new project by Yamaha called the mlan that looks very interesting so i would check that out too. When you take a decision please let me know. The TrutH lies within!!
 
My personal opinion is steer clear of the Korg, too many reasons to list, but Tascam has a nice 8 track HD workstation for under a grand... $899.**

Never purchase a DAW that trucates 24bit to 16 bit, aka Korg, Yamaha, Tasam, Foestex, Akai and Roland when using their disk burners. I would use the save the $300 to $ 400 you saved by getting the 788 for something like T-rackS 24 and scsi burner for making CD's, T-rackS actually has a way of getting the 24 quality into the 16 bit cd format. Check it out.
