sort of new to all this stuff, i was looking at anolong mixers for a while, but that world seems out of date.

then i looked in to DAW

we want computer based recording

can somebody explain in detail how this works..with all the intergration from the mixer to the computer... etc. etc.

In a nutshell, assuming a microphone as a source,

Mic -----> Preamp or Mixer (to boost mic signal to line level) -----> Sound Card (for analog to digital conversion) -----> Recording software (to capture digitized signal)

Playback would be something of the reverse of the above

Recording software -----> Sound Card (for digital to analog conversion) -----> powered speakers (or amplifier to non-powered speakers)

The signal chain might change slightly when using sources other than a microphone, but that is the basic structure.
