Hello All,

Well I'm finally about ready to go and buy some gear and I was hoping that you all could take a look and tell me if, for the money, these look like a decent set of starting gear. I know there is a ton of better gear out there and I know that I can't call this setup a professional setup but as a newbie just starting with limited cash, I'm just curious if I could get a decent sound out of this stuff.

Korg D1600 Digital Multitrack Workstation
Presonas Blue Tube Mic-pre
DBX 166XL Stereo Comp (compressor/limiter/noise gate)
Yorkville YSM1P Active near field monitors
Octava MK319 condensor mic's
Shure SM58/57's

I can get the whole lot of this stuff for about $3000 US. I thought that it sounded pretty good but what do I know..:).

As always, your guys (and gals) opinions are extremely valuable..please let me know what you think. Thanks alot

God Bless!

Looks pretty ok from here.... How's it look over there guys?

Ow, and now we're on the subject. Was you plan on doin' man?

Looks OK.

Any particular reason you choose the DBX over an RNC?
I know the Presonus QC used to be shaky, are it better now?

Regebro,

"Any particular reason you choose the DBX over an RNC?

To be honest, I didn't notice a RNC where I was...that's not to say they didn't have it...I just didn't notice it....what are the advantages of the RNC over the DBX?? I know the DBX has the compressor/limiter/noise gate all in one and it only runs about $250, but he's going to give it to me for about $220. How much is the RNC??

Any info will help. And thanks everyone for your reply's...please keep them coming....

God Bless!

This should handle what you want to do to start and is definitely expandable later :D

Don't forget mic stands and cables in your budget. You may also need speaker stands so that your monitors are at ear level....very important.

I think your choice of the D1600 is excellent. I'd skip the Bluetube and I'd buy an M-Audio DMP3.....no tubes but a cleaner preamp that can be pushed harder with less distortion. That's important when you use weak output mikes.

I'd buy an Audio Technica 4033, Rode NT1000, Marshall V69, or Studio Projects C1 or C3. The Oktava MK's are slightly dark mikes with a high-end rolloff. (I used to own the MK219) I find that usefull sometimes but I just think the ones I mentioned are more versatile with higher quality control.

The RNC is the compressor of choice for homerec'ers, and it's in the same price ballpark ($250-ish). I don't personally own one (yet), but I've heard enough to know it's the best way to go in the price range.

Actually, the RNC is about $175 at Full Compass and other online dealers.
I'm a newbie, but I've done a ton of reading the archives here for a month or so.I also second researching the RNC,the DMP 3 preamp, and taking your time with the large-diaphram condenser mics.Nothing against the Okatava 319--I'd love to own one,in fact it may be my first LD mic--but if you're budgeting for a few mics,I's try a few different flavors. It's nice to have a selection of mics to try with a given voice or instrument. One thing I have learned in my little bit of experimenting is that a mic is like any musical instrument--it has it's own sound and resonance and vibe. Why buy 3 Strats when you could have a Strat,a Les Paul, and a nice acoustic?
And personally I'd skip the SM 58's and get 57's.Just my preference--the 57's sound better recorded to my taste than my 58 and Beta 58.You'll read it here over and over, but it's astonishing how good an SM-57 can sound.

I have a pair of the DBX 166XL comps (along with RNCs!) -- they are very usable.

But yes, if you can only get one -- the RNC is THE WAY to go.........!

RNC instead of DBX, add a couple of small diaphragm condensers (Oktava MC012 or Marshall MXL 603's, and consider a dedicated reverb unit (Lexicon MPX 100 or TC electronics M300). Don't forget headphones and a headphone distribution amp (?Rolls). Best of luck, you're doing OK-Richie

Id skip the Blue Tube.....SP VTB-1, Delta DMP3, Joe Meek maybe......

Thank's Everyone!!

Sorry I didn't say thanks earlier...been out of town a few days...I do appreciate everyone's input...I'm going to research everything I can about the other options you all have given me...my only problem (as with most people just starting out) is budget..so I may be limited to certain equipment for right now even if I find that other stuff is better....and in my case, it probably will be :). Just basically want a good starter setup...once I've spent my whole lump of cash, then I won't mind just spending a few hundred here or there every other month...but starting from scratch is pretty expensive so unfortunately, I'm going to have to settle with some of the smaller stuff....

Anyway, thanks to all that responded and anyone else who has any more advice, please keep it coming.

And a big negative on the Indie film BBS...sorry...

God Bless!
