I'm ready to build the following system for multitrack recording and would like comments/improvements. I don't care about cutting edge just that it is proven to be rock solid while trying to keep costs down.

mobo: ASUS P4B266 w/Intel i845D and ICH2 chipset
processor: Pentium P4 1.6a GHz Northwood 512k cache CPU
Sound: Audiophile 24/96
Video: Matrox G450 16MB VGA card DDR SGRAM AGP DH
Case: anything with at least 400W power supply
OS: XP pro

Suggestions? improvements that would be worth extra cost?

Everything looks great...
Might want to step up to a higher CPU..perhaps 2.4gig
Get yourself a good CDRW too !!;)
Ram ?? 1gig DDR

Thanks Stealthtech,

Also since I am building a system that is considered "old" by industry standards i'm wondering if there are any compelling arguments in favor of bumping up from the Asus P4B266 to the P4B533 mobo series?

Something about the P4B533 having a faster bus speed but i'm not sure what that means or if it will really make a huge difference to justify the increased cost. i'm just wanting to do some simple multitrack recording.

Comments? Thanks!!

Wouldn't be a bad idea....533mhz front side bus
I recently upgraded to a P4PE with the 533...excellent mobo

Do you have a specific reason for using XP Pro over Home? Other than the lack for multiprocessor support and more advanced networking capabilities in Home, the 2 are pretty much the same product. If you don't need those features, why fork over an extra $60 for Pro?

You can also pick up much better GeForce based cards with 2 VGA outputs for less than $100. I picked up a dualhead GeForce4 MX440 card with 64Mb of RAM at BestBuy for $99.

Sound: Audiophile 24/96 , i think is weak...

and mic ? and mic preamp ? and mixer ?

Not everybody has a huge budget. That was physics club's primary concern. The Audiophile is a competent card that provides darn near pro-quality results at a price not that much higher than cards from Creative.
