ive been recording on my desktop for about a year now with no problems. recently ive purchased a laptop, and have noticed problems with the playback when recording. there are gaps in the sound. i do not have a mac, but the laptop has alot of raam. i was wondering if the soundcard is the problem? and where i might be able to get an affordable one if it is.

cheers.

Check out one of the Presonus firewire interfaces. Firebox or Inspire

The Gaps in the sound could be because the Audio Buffer is too low....If the Buffer is too low the audio will tend to Cut out leaveing gaps in the audio but if it is too high you get latency so I suggest adjusting it so you don"t get any pops Clicks or gaps in the sound and so there is minimal Latency....

Cheers

RME is rock solid. I own the Multiface II. You can use it with a PCI(desktop) or PCMK card (laptop). They come bundled with one or the other for 800 or 900 bucks. Most rock solid ad/da converstions I have experienced. It has 8 channels of on board I/O and 8 more channels via adat lightpipe.
