I am new to this board and this is my first venture into recording at home. All of my studio work was on reel-to-reel and I wasn't engineering.

I am setting up a PC with an external hard drive and sound card. I also have a nice mixer and all the necessary mics, mostly SM 57s.

My question is what do you do for playback?

When I was doing studio work, we would throw down the basics all at once. Then, while playing the recording back, we would lay down additional tracks.

How is this done when recording on a PC with some of the currently popular recording software?

Thanks for your time...Bert

It works pretty much the same.

With a multitracking program, like Cakewalk for example, you arm the track(s) you wish to record on. Any previously recorded tracks will playback through your monitors while you record the new track.

Any tracks you don't want to hear during recording can be muted
