Play it loud!

hi there

does anyone know this problem: playing the track loud it sounds great - just the way you want it. But at a low level it sounds very weak - especially the vocals.

how to fix this?

As if we didn't have enough things to think about while mixing: http://web.wt.net/~rg21518/fletcher.html

Our ears' frequency response is not linear at all volumes. At lower listening volumes, bass and high frequencies need to be louder to be perceived at the same level as mid-range frequencies. At higer volumes, our ears hear the low and high end better... which can mean what sounded perfect at low volumes can sound too bassy at higher volumes.

I like to check my mixes at a wide range of levels. That's really the only way I've found to deal with it. If you can get things sounding pretty energetic at a low volume, it'll probably kick at higher volumes.

pglewis: so you think that's just the way things are?
well my ears hear the basses better at low levels :-)

thanks for your advice

Yeah, the Fletcher-Munson curve is a generalization... everyones' ears are different. You're a mutant.

The ideal level to mix at is said to be 84DB C scale slow response. Try it you will like it.I had the same problem when I was mixing loud.

PAULIE, IS THERE A WAY,(WITHOUT SPENDING MONEY)THAT I CAN FIGURE OUT MY MIX LEVEL?

Spend a little money. Go to the Shack and buy an SPL meter for about $40.
