who can take a stab at guessing the aprox reverb setting on this 17 second snippet from a Jack Johnson recording. The guitars feel pretty dry, but I can tell there some definite reverb(?) going on. It's nice and subtle, but I like it. Any guesses?

Not much there. Light plate reverb?

yeah, it doesn't seem to trail much, but there's definitely something there fattening it up.

Listen right around 8 seconds where he says "vowed" as in "they Vowed to love one another". Right on that "vowed", you can really hear something going on.

Could be a plate. I never really use them.

Any other thoughts?

My guess would be either one of the "wood room" settings on a really good Lexicon verb, or something similar.

Of course you can't rule out the possibility that what we're hearing is actually the room itself, not verb at all.

Chris

If this was a sample from a live show, (as the the word, "live" was in the title), then it would only make sense that it was the hall he was playing in and not an artificial verb.

Cheers! :)

Yeah, that is a live performance. However, I believe it is done in a small room at a radio station. It seems odd to me that they would mic it instead of plug directly in, but maybe they do that to since the crowd can be heard in stereo as well.

Okay...if this is a purely live sound, how would you fake it? small wood type room?

I think this is a good challenge - I need more of this stuff.
I think the room is not a player - the trail is too short - or am I just totally ignorant? (you can say I am - I'm here to learn.)
I jacked the volume and I hear all of the higher frequencies being affected in exactly the same way - indicating to my unsophisticated, poorly-trained, used-to-work-on-jet-engines ears - that the reverb is indeed artificial but it's one I can't afford!
OK - lay it on brothers! Prove that I'm full of shit!

That's the spirit!

I can put up the whole damn song if you want, but I don't think there's really anything more to be heard. Let me know and I can put up that link as well.

Yeah - please post the link - I was kinda diggin' that tune.
He's that guy I saw on Leno last week, right? Younger guy, has a bass player with him?
Thanks

And this is better than bitchin' about spam/no spam!

okay, well here's the new full link to Jack Johnson covering an old Taj Mahall (i know I'm spelling that wrong) song called Frankie and Johny.

there is also an mp3 of him just speaking before the song...this might also help...

I don't have any new guesses, but I'd like to just point out that this song LONG predates Taj (although he did do a great version).

Just keepin' the facts straight,:)

Chris

hmm...yeah, actually, I thought Bob Dylan did a version as well, and I figured that was done earlier, but I was just basing it on what ol' Jack Johnson says before the song...

Oh, and MC GITARZ...I'm not sure if he was on leno or not, but I'm guessing it wasn't him. He tends to either play solo or with the whole band which is bass and drums along with him who plays guitar and sings...obviously...

Actually, Dylan didn't cover this one until the 90s. But this is one of those tunes that dates back to pretty much the beginning of recorded American music (and well beyond that most likely). There are versions of it from the 20s on up.

I know, I know, nobody but me cares about this stuff...

(I'll shut up now),

I was in the middle of replying and my damned computer locked up again - I need a new one. You're right, Groucho - it's an antique.

My mom had a recording of this she used to play for me when I was a kid. It was on a 78rpm wax record - I think the singer was something like Bessie Smith - I can still hear it in my head. I think it was written by one of the old 'blues dudes' 'cause it has that 'shootin' her with the Colt' thing goin' on.

So - no more takers on the verb issue? And Lexicon has a 'wood room' setting? Hmmmmmm - I really need a banjo but you can't have too many effects!

so no one has any other thoughts on how to duplicate this reverb...or whatever it is?:(

I would think you would want a reverb with a very long tail - maybe around 2000 ms, but with a small amount of "wet" - probably 5% or less. Probably around 60ms of predelay.

I'm totally guessing out my ass, but it doesn't sound too impossible. It's a very slight, subtle verb with a long tail. And I still think it's likely that what we're hearing is just the room. But that being the case, I'd avoid "platey" sounding verbs and go for more of a "room" or "hall" sound.

That's my best shot,

Chris

okay, well, this is my last shot at trying to get anyone to respond to this...

ANYONE ELSE have an idea how to fake or reproduce this subtle reverb sound?
