I am looking at making a new computer desk for recording and monitoring. I need space for 2 monitor speakers, comp tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse, scanner, printer. Very innexpensive preferably. I hope you can help. Thanks.

here's my design (pt. 1)

Hi Elliot,

The attached file contains the design of my current desk. I think it could fill your needs perfectly but if you decide you are going to use it you'll have to rectify/consider a couple of flaws which I'll outline here.

Flaw one: I misjudged the height of the monitor shelves and had to put my monitors on their sides to keep them at ear level! You should calculate the height so that the centre of the monitors in their correct vertical or horizontal position are level with your ears when you're sitting.

Flaw two: Since my design drawing was not done to scale I did not calculate that I wouldn't be sitting dead centre between the speakers. My chair is a few inches off-centre to the right. This is easily overcome by sitting with the left leg touching the side of the 19" rack and I find it is comfortable enough even during long mixing marathons.

Hope you find it useful.

and here's the finished product!

the attachment shows the final incarnation of my (amateur) design. I'm quite happy with it and it seems my requirements were quite similar to yours....printer and scanner included! :D
The wood used was cheap five-ply board I got from a large discarded shipping box. A lick of paint and contact paper for the top do wonders to cover the cheapiness! :p

That is almost exactly what i was thinking about in a quick sketch i did. Im not quite sure about having rack space tho, it probably is a good idea. I dont think i saw a mixer in that picture, was there one, and if there is, how cluttered is your desktop havbing both a mixer and keyboard on it? How much did the whole project come to? All in all, cool desk man!

Hey Reliker.............

What kind of wood did you use? and how thick is it, Sir? Thanks in advance

cont....

if you can call it a mixer....yes....to the left is my trusty 4 trakker, a fostex x28h (with dust cover ) which I use as a cheap mixer replacement since I've gone digital. It's got a very small footprint tho'. A proper mixer would take up more space obviously.
Since I got the wood for free, ( 5/8" five-ply board, -> DJTony) my only expenses were hinges for the doors, woodscrews, paint, glue and formica (is that the English name?) for the top, not contact paper like I said, sorry, my mistake). The actual construction was done by my father (also for free) so in total it must have come to less than $50. As for the clutter I've included another piccy I've just taken as I started this reply so you can get an idea........

Longsoughtfor - Is it possible to obtain the exact specs for a desk shown on your site (Larry's deck)? Looks like it's the one to best suit my needs. Please advise.
