I am about to purchase a new kit. When I do, I am going to cut a mic hole in the front head. I have had conflicting advice on the placement. One guy says that the 3 o'clock spot is the best bet. Another says dead center. What is your opinion and why?

I put it around 7 or 8. Basically, the closer to the center you put it, the more attack you'll get from the beater head.

Here is my conflicting advice.
Put it about the 1 to 2 O'Clock area. When I gig a lot the sound guys short stands are usually hard to fit in a smaller hole that is low. When the hole is higher and toward the hi hat side they can put a mic in there and angle it toward the beater and away from the snare and hat for maximum isolation.

Dexter is right about the sound though. The "tone that your kick throws out has to do with how much of the middle of the resonant skin is intact. If you cut away the middle, you will mainly get attack (which may or may not be what you want). If you leave a goodly portion of the skin middle intact you will get more tone.

I still stick to putting the hole where I suggested though.

if you can go without cutting a hole, that would be better. cept for live. i had a guy with dw's come in and didnt have a hole in his head (i can hear you laughing lol ). i just set the bass mic back about 6 in. and covered it with a heavy planket. it sounded really good.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, accoustically speaking, I would rather not cut one at all. But when I play out, the rock star in me can't have a blanket covering my brand new toy. : )

Thanks again. You have been extremely helpful.

What about this. The kick is 20 (diameter) x18 (deep). Having said that, if I do put it dead center, do you think the depth of the drum will still maintain nice tone?

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I would like to get this right without spending a bunch of money on trial & error drum heads.

i wouldnt advise "cutting" a hole in the head. your better off melting the hole with a hot coffey can. i put the hole around 7 or 8. if you dont want it there loosen the lugs and spin it to the desired position.
