Wheres the best place to position room ambience mics for drums. Is it best to have one close and one distant? And height - above the drums, same level, mroe toward the ground etc?

I'd say this is more a matter of preference. Best bet is to spend a few hours and trying everything you can think of and see which one you like the best.
A few years back a friend and I were recording a 5pc kit, standard 4 mic setup, Bass, Snare, two overheads. We were recording in a finished attic with hardwood floors and angled ceiling. The drums were at the end of the attic facing the stairwell that was on the other end of the attic. We put a mic about halfway between the drums and the stairwell, probably 4-5 ft high and a mic at the bottom of the stairwell about 1-2ft off the floor and it turned out pretty damn cool.
