Okay, as per your comments, I've "moistened" the vox, added some parts and tried to make the chorus "pop" a little more. I'm hoping this is close to a final mix on this one. I'm ready to put it to bed and start working on a new song. I've got five kick-ass ideas burning a hole in my pocket.

Let me know how close I am. Thanks, as always.

Song: NoWhere_revised

I left the original up for comparison, just in case any of you are that bored. :-)

I gave this new mix several listens this morning, going back and forth between the one from last week and today's and I am very impressed with the latest mix!

The drums have been softened up quite a bit! I didn't really have any major qualms with the old ones but, this now blends them better into the song and lets me concentrate better on the words and excellent guitar work! I like it!

There also seems to be a smoother eq to the overall mix now and it sounds quite slick and as polished compared the the previous which had a few bumps and bruises here and there.

About the only thing lacking in the mix as it sits now is a bit of top end sheen. The highs seem a bit dull and too polite, like some older Alan Parsons stuff that had a lot of layers and that British flat, polite top end and dynamics to it, if you know what I mean?

I am very tempted to use the word "Keeper" on this one and, I think I will! I think you have given Nowhere, the class it deserves as it sounds professionally slick and balanced in performance and mix quality.

Keep em' comin' man!

Cheers!:)

Finally had a chance to listen (yeah, I'm sticking around, hissy fit over).

Aaaaaaaaaaaabsolutely KICK ASS!

This is definately going to get a few plays when I do live shows ;)

I did the same as

ghost.................
I can pretty much say the same as him only he says it MUCH more intelligibly than I would.
Basically I am looking forward to more.
All the luck in the world to ya PiltdownMan!!!!!

Nice tune. Reminded me of Hotel California at the beginning but more interesting stuff going on. I liked the octave part on the singing and the harmony coming in was good also. Drum track was well done also, I wish I could force myself to spend more time on the drum parts of my tunes. Good dynamics alway a good thing IMHO. Well thought out guitars parts during the release. Thanks for posting it

Sounds great PDM. Things are very clear and the performances are really good. Is that the B2 on your voice? Sounds really good on you. What preamp? Just curious. It sounds fairly silky for a B2.

If I have one suggestion it's bring the drums up a bit. They're a little bit buried in the guitars during the chorus.

Huge improvement. Great song!

The only thing that really struck me was that the kick gets lost under the heavier parts of the song. Besides that it sounded great on my headphones.

Isn't the Piltdown man that caveman-ish hoax that was supposedly some big find, and the big attraction for awhile that was supposed to be REALLY old? Then they found out that some guy made it and planted it to be found. That story is probably a bit off...but you get the idea. The gist...of the idea of...the story...that may not even be this one. :D

Just what came to my mind the other day, when I wondered the very same thing, and just thought really hard, instead of actually searching for the answer, which is what I'll be doing NOW, when it's back on my mind.

He was supposed to be the MISSING LINK between humans and apes. Hence the "pilt down" on the "man".

Wow. Thanks for the accolades, all! You really don't know what that means to me. I just went through alcohol rehab last week -- 8 days sober now and counting -- so I'm really trying to focus on my music a bit more. It's amazing how different it is to record and mix sober. A bit scary, frankly. I was afraid I'd post this and have everyone tell me to burn all my equipment, so the positive comments mean a lot. I'm sighing in relief at this very moment.

Sorry... didn't mean to get on that subject. It's just kind of a major force in my life right now.

Nice job, Kgirl, on the Piltdown Man knowledge. That's exactly right. I'm an evolution buff. When I needed a name to join nowhereradio, I figured no one had that name, and I kind of thought of my music as more of a hoax than real music, so I thought it kind of fit.

Sluice. Yeah, that's the B2. If you notice one of the posts, it says I'm missing some high end. That may be because I had to really back off the treble on the B2 to keep the zees and sibilants from overpowering the vocal. I may try to put a bit of high end back in in the Cubase EQ and see what happens, so thanks for the input, Ghost.

Looking forward to more help from all you guys and ladies. You've improved my music dramatically in the few months I've been coming here. If you don't believe me, I can prove it with some prior versions of these songs that I thought kicked ass at the time. :-)

Looking forward to more of your knowledge as I dig in and start working on a new song. First I have another post I need to get to though. Hopefully, another final (or close to it).

Hey,

I just went and listened to a lot of your songs...I am amazed at the difference in how your voice can sound between songs on the same album. Yet, still from you. And your range musically. I really enjoyed your older stuff a lot, and I don't know squat about mixing. Nowhere was great to listen to--particularly for me just at that moment when the chorus goes into the verse. I love that jump.

I hadn't listened yet when the need to jump in with my vast knowledge of piltdown hoaxes stirred up in me! So, I wanted to come back. You have a lot of really good stuff there!

Waiting for more...

You know, I can never get it all done in one post...my mom does the same thing. I hang up from her on the phone, and she calls RIGHT back to tell me something she forgot! I hate it. I am just like her. Oh my god.

Anyway, I work in a Natural History museum, and indeed we have much space dedicated to Darwin, but we're also developing a new "Explore Evolution" exhibit. I'm sure there will be some space there about the theories, but I think the concept is more about change overall over spans of time. Don't know why I thought that was necessary to tell you...but you are an Evolution Buff, so there it is. The exhibit won't be ready until 2006--I think there's still research going on at this time on the grant for the exhibit.

My dream job. I'd love to work in a Natural History museum. I spent two days at the Field Museum in Chicago and lost count of the intellectual orgasms I had in there. It's not strictly a natural history museum, of course, but it had enough to keep me enthralled. And I was there when they were working on Sue, which was awesome. You're lucky to have the job you have, IMO.

My only better job would be an actual paleontologist. Louis Leaky is my hero -- well, one of many in that realm -- including Dawkins and the late Stephen Jay Gould.

And, yes, I do have a Darwin fish on the back of my car. :-)

Give me more details on the exhibit. I'm always up for a trip to a museum. Does that make me a nerd?

To everyone else, sorry to get off topic.

Nice job, and a lot of good dynamics happening in this piece. Your vocal sounded like it was sitting well in this mix.

On headphones the lows sounded like they were kind of dominating the mix just a tad...maybe it just needs a tiny bit of "sparkle" to even it out.

I really liked the song overall and you had a great vocal on there.

Also, congrats on staying sober! Your music can definitely be therapy!

Keep up the good work!

:D

Another good track Pilt. I'm glad i started catching your stuff, very nice quality.

My favorite here is the one vocal line just BEFORE the heavier section kicks in the way that vocal line ends up is just great.

Who in gods name would 1 star this. That's just either pettiness or jealousy.

Hey if you ever needs some guitar tracks for future projects drop me a line, that's the one area i think this song could use a boost.

I'm gonna drop 5 and try to boost your count.

I think I may have said this last time but I love the guitar tones and playing during the verses. I also like how your voice mixes with them. Nice vocal tone. This is a fantastic song! I actually love that guitar run in the chorus as well from the same guitar.

I really have no complaints. Maybe bring those drums up during the chorus (I think the cymbals are fine as is).

Excellent work. Got my day off just right. As a mater of fact I think I will listen again... :)

Oh...here are some more of those stars...5 to be exact!

Hey PD man,
sweeet man, ...this is the first one ive heard from you, looks like ive missed out. I love your vocs. At first the low voc hits ya as a novelty, ...then those kind harmonies come in and "bring it together"....
...Only nits would be the drums.... (not present enough?)..... and the heavier guit. tones....(sound a touch modelled)..... all minor stuff. There are aspects of this that i might have compressed more.... but that would be so preference (and prolly wrong:D ) that i aint even gonna bring it up.
Very nice work man!!!!
gw/5

Smooth guitar sounds at the begining. Here comes a changup... I liked them when they broke out too. Decent harmonies too.

The vocals during the "quieter parts" are competing with that clean guitar. I think you need to make some kind of cut to that guit to get the vocal sitting right.

That little lead guit part (the one kind of running the scales) during the intro is a bit soft.
