I'm sure there was a thread on this before, but I've searched and can't find it. Knowing me I've probably skimmed right over it though. Right, let me see/hear your drumkits. I'll start. This isn't my main kit, just a kit i bought off a friend for £35($50ish)not including the cymbals which i already had. I've tuned it up as well as i can, considering they are quite old heads, and recorded with a soundlabs powered mixer, cheap bass mic, sm57 copy and 2 overheads(toal cost for mics £100), from the mixer into my...wait for it...sound blaster sound card. And if that wasn't enought i had to guess the levels, lol. I know what you're thinking, "excuses excuses", but I'm actually rather pleased with the outcome :D

Note: My playings a bit out for a lot of it. I recorded in one take, making it up on the spot, and just for a bit of fun/to see what kind of quality i could get.

Here is the link to the sound clip.

What I would do if I were you is try to get one More Mic ,even a Cheapo One and Put one of your Overheads between the 1st and 2nd Toms and then Put the Cheapo Mic just over the Floor Tom and then Put the Last Mic in the Middle Overhead....

This way you get a Semi-Proper Micing of all the Toms and your Snare Mic should Pick up your Hats and the Floor Tom Mic should also Pic up the Ride and the Overhead will Pick up the Cymbals...You can Pan the Snare and Bass Drum to the Middle and then Pan the Mic for Toms 1 & 2 a Bit to the Left and Pan the Floor tom a Bit to the Right and Leave the Cymbals Panned to the Middle....This way when you do a Drum Roll it will start in the Left speaker but end in the Right speaker to get more of a Stereo Drum effect......

You can Probably get a Cheapo Used Mic for under $30, I use a Cheapo Dixon Mic for my Floor Tom and I get a Good Sound out of it and I also use a Cheapo Shure C606 for the Bass Drum and it sounds ok But I will probably replace it with a Real Bass Mic.....

Good Luck

Yeh, i got a few cheapo mics lying around anyway. I though it did sound stereo. I like to have the cymbals panned too. When i do a fill, it does start middle with snare, go left for 1st tom, middle for second, and right for the floor tom. The way i meant for it to go. I could have miced up each individual tom, but didn't want to. :D

What the hell, I've got no pride left anyway. I posted pics and clips a long time ago, but here will do it again.

The last sound clip is a test for changing how I record my bass drum, which is by putting a gallon paint can inside standing up. Now that I like it I'm going to record the final track and then start re-doing all the instruments.

that makes my kit look like a toy lol

One again:

Clip1
Clip2

In both takes I used 4 mics, I´m playing with OH position to achieve a different sound. Both takes are flat, no eq, rv, or comp.

TamaSabian, I think you should try moving the snare mic a little farther out. It sounds too much like the top head and no snare. Just my opinion though, some people dig that sound.

Kinda weird that I can hear it more in diff places of the track though, maybe its just my imagination :D

Nice sounding kit though man.

Philgood! Nice job. How'd you mic your snare? That's a great sound!

Thanks, I´m not pleased with my snare too. I´m not so sure if it´s just mic placement, I remember when I played with ambassador, I like it better than this emperor both coated though.
Which clip you like the most??.

Thanks again

I switch around. My favorite mic right now for snare is a cheapie Superlux condenser. The EC0-H6A. I mount it on it's side (it's a side address mic) pointed at the center of the head about an inch off the rim. Very out of the way and in no danger of being hit since it's back is under the rim of my fist tom.

You can barely see it in my pic. It has a gold screen.

Wait, here's a close-up...

I've got a copy of that mic. I use a pair of them for overheads. Hmm i'd of though it would be a bad idea to have it so close to the snare, being a condenser. Hmm i'd give this setup a go if i had more condensers. Maybe once i get my studio up and running. :D

Its an electret and has a lower output. It works for me, but might not work for very loud players. You could always get a condenser with a -10db pad.

Wow Philgood... how do you tune your toms to sound like that? They sound awesome. also, I saw your hi hats are paiste alphas (I think). How are they? They certainly do sound good on the recording :D .

Actually those are 802's. I bought them because I cracked my previous ones and didn't have alot of cash to buy new ones. I had the intent of buying better ones later, but got to like them so much I never changed.

I can't explain the tom tuning except to say I follow the regular tuning method and I tune the bottom heads a tad bit tighter than the tops. Nooooooo muffling!!

I crank the snare BTW, but not to the point of a "pop". Bottom head is very tight also.
