I'm currently thinking of making my own pickups, and had a few questions. I'm using a very low wind count of 666 winds :p and I was wondering
does peg sizes make a diffrence on sound/volume?
what guage do you think I should use? (I'm thinking a bit thicker than usual)
and what kind of magnet? (I'm looking for a fairly powerful one)

any sugestions are greatly apreciated thxs.

i think this will all depend on the design. why are you using low winds and what design are you following? where are you getting the parts?

I don't have a designon paper, but I'll sketch one up for you guy's when i have some time. and I'm getting the parts from canadian tire :D

cept the winding wire, which I'm getting from radioshack...

well how did you get a figure of 666 winds when you don't know the guage of wire you'll be using? i think you need to at least half way know what you're shooting for and have a design to follow.

You realize that pickup wire isn't just plain copper wire, don't you?

wait.. what? isn't pickup wire just wax coverd copper wire? what does it use then?

TravisinFlorida: they do sell magnets, I'm making my own bobbins/covers ext. from raw matirials from canadian tire

Pickup wire is laquered, or coated with some other material so the windings are separated. Otherwise the pickup would short pretty much directly across it's + and -.

It's not wax, it's varnish. You dip the entire pickup in wax after you put it together. The varnish keeps the windings from shorting together. The wax keeps the windings from becoming microphonic.

nick, unless this is a science project i'd do a little more reading before going at this.

pretty mutch is a nice little science prodject.

and I thought they used wax. but my bad if it's varnish, anyway's I know pickup wire is coated, just like anyother coil wire (for radios or whatnot)

Cool, it'll be fun no matter what. Just jump in and mess around, it can't hurt anything. There is lots of great info on the net about how p'ups work, if you do a little study you can predict how your pickup will sound before you make it. It wold be kind of neat to see if you guess right. :)

my buddy made a humbucker for a science project when we were in the eighth grade. that thing was huge! he put it on a one string 2x4 monstrosity. it worked but it hummed like hell. :p

boingoman: yup, I've already quite a bit of reading, and intend to do some more hehe this should b fun

TravisinFlorida: that puts a new meaning to humbucker :p but I'm keeping it simple with a single coil :D

Go to Stew Mac and pick up THIS BOOK. Read it.

That should just about cover you.

Oh, and Stew Mac also sells pickup coil wire, and at least some types of magnets.
