Pickups to enhace sound

I recently purchased a Dean EVO. It is similar to the EPI Les Paul. It at times sounds a little cardboardy.

Anyone have any ideas on choices of pickups that I might upgrade to that can give a better sound. It has humbuckers in it but I am not sure of the grade.

Of course I may be completely barking up the wrong tree here but I am sure you will tell me if I am. Maybe you can't improve the sound with a simple pickups upgrade.

You can get hotter replacement p/u's.
Duncans or EMG's will prob. put some concrete on that cardboard.

so much of the sound comes from the wood.......

with that said, pickups are like food....... everybody likes something different......
