Picking up radio signal

First off I'm using a Behringer UB802. Might this be
part of my problem? I'm also using a Delta 1010LT
sound card.

When using just the master out while recording through
a microphone the signal is quite. However, once you
plug something into an input for monitoring that's
when the trouble starts. You can hear one of our
lame local radio stations ever so faintly in the
background.

What other means do I have to monitor thru headphones
while laying another track without listening to a top
40 band in the background? I'm trying to us the tape
in for this. In fact, if the only connection is an
input you still pick up the radio station's signal.

Should I just take this back and get something better?

I have the same mixer and never have that problem. It sounds like you need to buy some good shielded cables. If you use crappy cables they will act like an antenna.

To me, the problem sounds like it could be solved with balanced cables. If the source device giving you an input to the mixer does'nt provide balanced outs, try using a very short cable connected to a DI box, and then balanced runs to your mixer.
Keeping cable runs as short as possible will help eliminate noise and interference. (I am also under the impression that cables in use should be fully un-coiled, or they can act as a inductor)
Hope this helps,
Dave

bear. if you have evrrything hooked up correctly/correct cables.....
most circuits including UB have a circuit for dealing with RFI
so you dont get the problem...however if one part of it goes bad...
youll get the problem. i would try another mixer from a friend and see if problem goes away with same mic and cable. if it does ...then the ub is probably the culprit. if its the same problem....then probably the mic cable.
speculation...are you living near any transmission towers ?......

I ended up taking the mixer back and exchanged it for a Yamaha. This unit seems to be much quiter and does not pickup the radio noise. I don't know if it was just that particular mixer or the brand, but I'll be stearing clear of their products for now on.
