Picking Up Harmonics

Whenever I'm doing harmonics (clean guitar), it really never seems to pick it up on the recording that good. It picks it up well when you have some kind of distortion on it.

What are some ways that I can get a good harmonics sound out of my guitar yet still having a good guitar sound?

How are you recording? mic'ed (how many, what kind, and where is placement), direct (what type of pre-amp if any) A little more info would be helpful.
