I have a new laptop that doesn't have firewire ports. Therefore I need to buy a PCIMCIA card, right?

So which one does anyone here use and recommend? Where did you buy it?

Ive HEARD that its best to get a Texas Instruments one, but I'm getting the cheapest one I can find on ebay this week cos I'm poor. I'll let you know how it works out

Are you wanting a PCMCIA soundcard, or just a PCMCIA card with a FireWire port? I would suggest the latter, as there are more FireWire soundcard/interface options, and you could use the firewire interface with other computers.

Yeah I tried looking for them and I think the only ones were the Layla and Mona. There's probably others that I couldn't find, but it generally seems limited in that aspect. Question: With the PCMCIA-Firewire adaptor, do you still get the same speeds as firewire, or does the PCMCIA slow it down?

I am just wanting a firewire port. I am going to be using a Firepod as my interface.

Well, I did lots of searches on this topic, and there were many threads, so I basically picked this one at random to exhume.

Anyway, I, too, need a PCMCIA firewire card (to run a firepod on), and I, too, am dirt poor. I've read several times that Texas Instruments chipsets are the best, but so far all the cards I've found with TI chips are around $60. Other brand cheap cards can be as low as $15, though.

So, I guess, I'm asking for some input about using a $15 non-TI card. Who has done it? [mx_mx, I'm looking at you] Did it work? If not, did you then try a TI card? Did THAT work?

Or, can you point me to a significantly cheaper TI chip card? Maybe I'm missing something...

Not that I doubt you, but where does it say this is a TI card? Sounds like a good deal - too bad they're out.... :(

I realize this is a one man discussion at this point, but I did email the company, about this:
Your Query:

1394 Cardbus Card - 1932800 - is this a Texas Instrument chip set? Thanks!

Our Response:
Dear Customer,

We use the AGERE chipset on all of our FireWire products.

Regards,
Adaptec

Anyway, just thought I'd use that as an excuse for one last bump, before I let it die for good. I'm STILL looking for comments/success stories/horror stories about using a cheap PCMCIA firewire card.

Aww, no sweat - I knew you weren't purposely trying to mislead me. Anyway, that thread you linked made me think that might be a good choice, even if it isn't a TI chip. So that was helpful.
