I am mixing this CD for some good friends of mine in a band called Thief River.

I would really appreciate any input you all might have, as I want this to be as good as I can get it for them. By the way, that seemingly apparent noise at the beginning, is snare ghost notes. Not sure what to do there, cuz it really does sound like noise...

Thanx guys,

Jimmy

Man I'd gate or snip those "ghost" notes out. They sound like buttocks. Unless they're real prominent in the overheads, then you're f.....

Overall I think it's pretty good. The john wayne rhythm L and R guitars are a little crispy to me. They're kind of harsh when it's all rolling. Drums and vocals sound real good. Maybe could use a little more bass gtr to me. Tame the guitars and I think you're real close dude.

Sucks, the drummer is anal as f**k about having them in there. I'd rather hear them more prominent, or gone all together myself.

I feel some harshness in the guitars as well. Probably my mic placement. I have a 57 and a 421 track on all of them, so I will mess with that selection.

The singers voice is so resonant in the mid frequencies, that I keep feeling like the guitars are getting lost. I'm probably under compensating volume, for clarity. <did that make any sense at all?

Thanks for the input man. I really just want this to be all it can be for my buds.

Can't believe those are ghost notes; just sounds like noise. Is the drummer doing the same thing during the 2nd verse, maybe a little cut n paste is in order.

I'd like to hear more bottom end. My sub isn't thumpin like it should. Guitars seem fizzy once teh song gets going, I like them in the intro. More mandolin, please.

Not sure what to do with the vox. I hear the strong mids from this guy. Most times it's difficult to understand what he is saying. Seems like there is a good story in there, but I can only catch snippets here and there.

Naw, he only does it during the first verses.

My trusty sub died two weeks ago, and trying to find the sweet spot for my new one, so I am sure things are whacked there.

The guitars are fizzy huh? That is likely my biggest issue here.

Yes, more mandy!

This guys vocals have really been a challenge for me. The first demo we did over a year ago, we used a NT1A. Man, that was not a good choice for him. This time it was the SM7b, and the Vintech X73I, and still, the mids from his voice seem to break glass. If you could see the cuts I am already using, you would say 'do it over'.

I may have to find another way to get the vocals clear. I love a good challenge tho! :)

Thanx for the comments!

I'm all about getting this all that it can be. :)

You need one of those shreaky-harsh mics like the SP C1 for this guy so it balances out the mids. I'll let you borrow mine. ;)

it is noise ... sounds like the same splattering as on low quality mp3 conversion, and its all the way through, but not noticeable on the acoustic geetar on the end ...

This is a great track, great writing, well put together .. loved it thanks for posting :D

Posted new version over original player above.

Yeah, I'm fooked with the ghost notes. I tamed them down a little. Bass n subs up a bit, and rid of some guit fizz. Vocals a bit more clarity (I think). Listened too many times, so I'm a bit numb it seems.

Hopefully this is a bit better.

Thanks again for helping out guys! :)

Yeah the guitars seem better to me. I didn't have any issues with the vocals before, but maybe now they're a little murky in the low mids? I don't remember them having that kind of un-clarity. The bass gtr seems to be more noticeable, but it's a little mucky too. It's more of a rumbly mush than a clear bass line. I can hear it's basic tone at the breakdown at 2:44. I like the top end of it, but it gets totally lost once everything gets rolling. I think it's an improvement though. The crappy ghost notes are much less irritating now. Now you could pass it off as brush work on the snare if you wanted to. :D

So I'd say IMO, keep working on getting the bass cleaner and clean up the vocals. The rest seems pretty good to go.

I think vocals sound better, more articulate and discernable.

Overall it sounds much better. I like the bass and kick where they are. The guits are more tamed and I can barely hear the ghost notes.

Seems Greg and I are giving conflicting opinions, that kind of sucks for you.
