Piano Vocal Piece

Hello,
Just thought I'd post an mp3 (It's been awhile) of a John Gorka song I covered. Vocals were done through a Soundelux U97 (Cardiod mode) into my Great River MP2 preamp. From there it went into an RNC Compressor (Super Nice Mode) to tame the levels before hitting my Delta 44 A/D converters. Recorded and mixed with N-Track. Vocal reverb was N-Track reverb and the piano had a touch of BlueReverb. DB Audioware's Mastering Limiter was used on mixdown to prevent clipping and add a bit more volume (far from anything resembling mastering!).
I've got some more covers I might put up (mostly with acoustic guitar) so let me know if you'd like to hear some more stuff. Appreciate any comments on the recording/mixing/musical performance. Thanks!

Kind of a Cat Stevens feel. Nice piano - the vocal needs some work. Add some reverb and a bit of delay. It felt like there was some uneveness in the rhythm from time to time also.

Keep trying!!!

Thanks for listening...Interesting Cat reference, I'm a big fan of his! There was some reverb on the vocals, but I'll work on the settings a bit. The U97 did pick up some of the keys clicking since I tracked it all in one take, hopefully that didn't muck up the Vocal track too much. I experimented with a noise gate, but I think that made it worse! Touche on the Rhythm, I've always had problems counting to 4 :D , made it hard for me to get into a band in high school! I did get alot better but it was really bad for awhile. Maybe I should figure out that metronone feature in N-Track...

Couple of sour notes in there, and the timing seems a bit off. Sorry for being a dick, but thats the first 2 things that were in my head when listening. The vocals seem too up front. Most of the problems in the singing happened when you sustained a note.
Really belt it out! When you're practicing don't just sing quiet cause you think it soudns bad, really let it out! It'll get better.

I listened to your recording. Took a while to download.

Overall, it is a good cover of the song. Would suggest that you change keys to better fit your vocal range. I noticed that what you played was in the key of E major. Try transposing it to D or C major and see if you have an easier time.

That is a nice piano sound. Is this sampled or did you mic an acoustic piano?

I agree that you need to use the click track. Takes some getting used to, but the end product is worth it.

Jake - I appreciate your honesty on the vocals, they have always been a problem with me (I'm trying though!) ditto on the timing.
Sonic Misfit - The piano was the Grand Piano sample on my General Music Pro 1 Keyboard. It's got 88 fullsize weighted keys, I'm pretty happy with it! When I buy a house in a few years, I'll buy a nice Baby Grand piano to go with it! It was in the key of E, Gorka does it on the guitar in D with a capo on the 2nd fret (making it in ...E!) I actually cheat by playing it in D and transposing it up a step on the keyboard. I'll try to bring it down a step or two and see how that comes out.

I really like the Piano sound a lot. I agree with whoever said that you should belt it out. There is no one there to criticize you so go for it and belt it out. I also notice that you put the piano hard right and the vocals hard left...maybe try bringing them a little closer together. Other then that it sounds good to me.

Also it sounded like the vocal could be pulled back and use more compression, and the piano sounds dull and kinda dead... I hope you don't think I sound like a prick just trying to help ;-)
