hello all...i'm sure this has probably been asked, but i'm going ask again. my church is in the process of looking for a solid piano mic that will be used for live apps as well as recording...would love to get some recommendations for a middle of the road (in regards to price) mic for this kind of application. thanks in advance!

That's a toughie. In a difficult live environment, it's best to cram a dynamic in close, like inside a barely open lid, or even underneath. The trusty ol' SM57 has worked for me here.

I don't think I'd prefer record that way though, except for maybe rock/pop style piano.

i'd say go with condensers. someone else here just asked about micing a piano, and i recommend the Rode NT5s. They're a small condenser pair that sounded great on a live, grand piano that I just recorded in a church. I was only able to use one at the time and I was impressed....and i'm sure if I had used both I would have gotten even better results. Not a bad price for these mics either (i think i paid $350 for them)

I had a lot of success with Crown PZM's in a similar application. Set up time can be minimal since the mics can be taped under the lid. Placement will be key, but a little experimenting will yeild good results. Plus your audience won't have gangly chords and stands to distract them.

good luck
