I am laying down some piano tracks this weekend with a Yamaha SY85. I've always loved the piano voice on this keyboard (that's why I bought it 9 years ago).

I'm looking for some good tips on setting my piano track's EQ to get the richest quality sound. I've been EQ'ing by ear, but I know there's probably some good rules of thumb (specifically for piano EQ's) that would make a difference. Thanks in advance!

There are no EQ rules of thumb on a sampled piano... It was probably EQ'd when it was sampled. So, any suggestions would be moot.

On an actual piano, the first thing I do is add hi-shelf to the low mic and low shelf to the hi mic. It evens things out wonderfully. If your keyboard is "stereo-accurate," you could try that, but again, it was probably done to some extent on the way into the box.

PS - If you're using a VST or DX recording program, try the PSP PianoVerb - It's FREE and it rocks on sampled instruments... www.pspaudioware.com

Hope that helps...

Remind me again...hi-shelf is when you take out the high notes or the low notes?

High-shelf affects high fequencies and above (High-pass affects high frequencies above the lows).

I'm adding highs to the lows and lows to the highs.
