Hey!

I have made my first recording to attempt to learn a bit about mixing. It's just a piano and an accoustic guitar.

I can't seem to get them to blend in a good way. It doesn't sound really bad or anything, I just need some tips on how to mix them together and tricks to make them sound more tight.

Anything from tips to panning them (I've tried the piano in the middle and on the left side and so on) to reverbs or EQ.

Thanks!

Were they recorded together or separately?

With something this simple, you might want to make them sound as if they were recorded together, at the same time, which is what I would assume you're going for.
Also, real piano or digital?

I'd say pan one slightly left and the other slightly right. Add some light reverb for room ambience and see what you can get. Don't go crazy with panning. If there's anything I've learned yet here, it's not to go crazy with it.

You only really need to EQ if either sound too dull or bright--at least from my point of view.

Yeah it's a real piano, recorded with one mic (sm57 the only one I have). Not the best way to record it I'm sure but it sounds ok to me. I've tried a lot of different pannings. I'm actually starting to think that it's only me who gets paranoid or something and that it doesn't need change.

But yeah a bit of reverb made a big difference of course.

Thanks!

I agree with slight panning only. A 57 on piano is probably going to need a little boost at 12kHz, and cut somewhere in the low-mids, where the 57 usually sounds tubby. That cut might also help clear some room for the guitar. You could also try a subtle stereo effect on the piano to get it to sound bigger. Next time, try stereo miking the piano.
