phones and monitor out

whats the difference between the phones output and the monitor output? i know I cant hear any difference in sound between them anyway

The difference may be that the monitor out will have an option of +4 dBu for balanced pro devices or -10 dBu for balanced or unbalanced consumer devices.
 
In addition the phones output is stereo and has a headphone amp so the signal is much stronger. Some boxes combine the functions so it depends on what gear you are talking about. Your manual will have the details.
