phillips cdr775

I just bought the cdr775 for making one offs (and maybe copy some records to cd.) I know there are better, pro-level units and eventually I'll use software applications, but for now this is my choice. I have two questions, for anyone with hands on use with this unit.

1. The maunual claims this unit can only use audio cdrs. Is this true? Or is this only an issue if the cd is played on a seperate unit?

2. Can I use a standard "non-audio" cdrw as a master and then dub audio cdrs? Or will the dub then be audio vs digital.

I have scanned the posts but I'm not sure I've seen a specific reference to these questions. I'd like to add that I'm new to this site (been a musician for a long time) and I'm impressed with the level of knowledge and willingness to share that knowledge which I find here.
 
From what I understand, the 775 only handles C/D-R
and not C/D-RW. And yes it only writes to audio c/d's.
Furthermore, in some cases, music recorded on the 775 cannot be played on other stand-alone devices.
 
You can use CDRW and you can take a CD from the phillips and play it on any other CD player if its the same as my PHillips CDR 770,Jim
 
I had one for a short while and sold it. They can not use CD-Rs, only the audio CD-Rs. That was my main beef with the unit.
 
Thanks for your replys. I've had a chance to use the 775 a few times. It is very user friendly. I'm buring to an audio CDRW then I copy to an audio CDR. The CDs I've burned on the Phillips seem to work fine on other players (so far).
Eventually, I'll get a pro level unit but for now this is doing the job.
 
Hey mikeh, are you recording on the cdrw via a digital or analog signal. I have pondered this unit for quite some time. The reason I ask is that, I am under the impression that if you record to the cdrw through digital, it will enable the CMS copy protection which will disallow you to copy down to the cdr's.

Let me know if you have tried and succeeded with this.

What is the difference between a regular CD-R and a audio CD-R??
 
They're physically identical. What distinguishes them is how they are burned.

Can the audio CD-R's be played with more cd player than the regular CD-R's?

Are the audio's more money?
 
All CD-Rs are the same, as far as I know. You can use the same kind of CD-R for either audio or data.. whichever you want.

In response to JC Lives, if you burn to a CD in with digital, you can not dub in digital - you can however dub to analog. I'm useing this unit for one offs, analog in and out so I can accept that limitation.

In response to the questions re: CDR vs Audio CDR, unlike burning a CD in a computer, some units - in particular consumer units (like the Phillips)restrict the use of "normal" CDR medium - you must use audio CDR. Audio CDRs are slightly more expensive ($1.25 - $1.60) depending on brand and quantity.
 
Hey mikeh. Thanks for the info. That is what I suspected and is one of the reasons i have not persued the unit seriously.

As far as audio cr-r's i do believe the price has come down. I think you can now get them at places like Best Buy and Cicuit City for .60 to .70 each if you buy in bulk.

I also believe that places like MF and the like also carry the fairly cheaply. I think MF actualy had an internet special a while back that had them pretty cheap and it also included the jewel case.

Don't know if I am the dude you are refering to. If I am not, you can ignore this post. If I am, here goes.

In answer to your first question, no. I am using the Roland vs-880. Wounldn't mind having a 16 track anything.

In answer to your second question, my initials are the same as Jesus Christ, and because JC (Jesus Christ) lives in me, I Joe Clawson also live. Hence JC Lives.
