Newbie...forgive me! I have a EV76 mic that uses a 4.5 volt battery. It seems to work fine (although kind of quiet) with Phantom Power turned on in my amp. Do I haveto use the battery, or is it there just to accomodate amps that don't have Phantom Power??

As long as you provide phantom to the microphone it should work with out the battery.
Unless you need the battery in the compartment to complete the circuit.
I've been told that if you use both phantom and battery that the microphone is working some what better, but I can not say for sure for I have never tried out that hypothesis.

I use the AKG C1000S for live mics.
It uses a 9 Volt battery or Phantom power.
If the battery is installed, it takes precedence over the amp.
So.... if your amp supplies 48 Volt phantom power, remove the battery and keep it as a standby.
If your amp supplies less than 48 Volts, use the battery.

I have an ATM75 that has a battery and/or phantom option. It almost always sounds better on phantom. The battery option is for on location and running on battery power across the board. Taking the phantom power burden off the field recorder significantly improves the battery life of the field recorder. Or if there's any question on the quality of the phantom power being supplied, the battery option takes that concern out of the picture. And useful if going wireless and other options. A couple of OZs for the batt, versus a couple of lbs for the cable.

As far as which sounds better, you probably could have run a few tests in less time than it took to post here. Assuming you have said mic, and are not just considering a purchase. You could also setup a shootout with the various options to verify if any others concur with your thoughts.
