phantom power on dynamic mic

I was looking at audio interfaces (like the presonus firepod) and i think it said that you can apply phantom power to groups of inputs, but not individual inputs (or maybe this was a different interface, but besides the point) what if, you need to plug in a dynamic and it has to go into 1 of the 4 inputs that has phantom power... basically i'm saying, what happens to a dynamic mic (let's say a sm 57) when phantom power is applied to it?

Nothing. Don't worry about it. Ribbons are another story.

not supposed to be a problem with any dynamic mic. For ribbons, if voltage goes down the wrong wire (for instance, if you're in the process of plugging in a TRS cable, and as it goes in, Pin 2's current briefly goes down Pin 3's wire) then the surge of voltage can destroy the ribbon. And I guess ribbons are technically a kind of dynamic, so what I said at first isn't strictly true -- but you know it when you have a ribbon mic.

I have the Presonus Inspire, which is their entry level unit, and even that allows for individual phantom power per input, btw.

alright thanks guys. I wasn't sure which interface applied phantom power in groups of channels, maybe its not the firepod... what with it having 8 channels. but whatever the interface I needed to know if there would be problems having a dynamic plugged in getting phantom power.

thanks again.
