Yeah me and cominginsecond are pretty rabid Smile fans. I saw Wilson live in October and it still blows my mind in a way I didn't think possible for a jaded thirtysomething.

It gives me a lot of encouragement since I still have 30 years to perfect my masterpiece :)

It's funny you guys mention this.
Last week I was at the bookstore reading through the magazines and read an entire article on Carol Kaye. It was pretty cool. She said she always used the mute to get a good sound. I can't remember what magazine it was though!

I'll be seeing Brian in June at the Glastonbury festival here in the south west of England, I can't wait.

There's a book which I believe was published fairly recently (or at least since this thread was started) called "I just wasn't made for these times" which goes into some detail on the recording of Pet Sounds. I can't find it on the US amazon site but it's on the UK one.

EDIT: The US version is called "Wouldn't it be nice" and can be found here.

Hey! The mods deleted my post (I'm pretty sure) about Carol Kaye's claim that she played on many Motown tracks that are credited to James Jamerson. Including "Bernadette"!!

I find it really hard to believe that "Bernadette" was played with a pick, and in my opinion the sound is unmistakeably James'. I had a really good link that refuted her claims, too! Oh well, I guess I must've swore or something.

Do they delete your posts when you swear?

Great stuff in this thread. I just picked up the book "Wouldn't it be Nice" recently, it's about the making of Pet Sounds. Havn't got to it yet but am looking forward to seeing what's in it.

It's nice to get that sound like the "mmm mmm" that the guy sings on that Crash Test Dummies song.

I love that song. In fact that album is quite good. Produced by Jerry Harrison from the Talking Heads.

Thanks for the linkup mshilarious. I thought it was sort of strange to see this very familiar thread so close to my previous one the other day. Now I have enough Brian Wilson info to get me through....Well maybe a week anyway. Guess I should have searched a little better first.

I LOVE the beach boys. This sounds really corny byt Pet Sounds got me through a bad patch coupla years ago and the album sustained me for coupla weeks when i was not having the best of times. The sounds on that album... its optimistic /pessimistic/wistfull/elegant/positive/melancholy/childlike/sophisticated and above all utterly beautiful! Infact there should be a whole new wod invented to some it up!

On a different note, allthough i get bashed by people for it i really dig the early stuff. I mean you cant beat 'I Get Around' for a pure youth athem ( and its complex too!). It got a great vibe and then theres 'In My Room'... oh wow - see the Pet Sounds description above. And MANY more...

Top band.

Brian still likes 'em too. He played about 20 minutes of early Beach Boys tunes a cappella, then about another 30 minutes of early stuff with the full band, then took a break, came back and played Smile nonstop in its entirety, THEN played another 5 early tunes as an encore, and finally finished with "Love & Mercy". Way, way, way more than I ever expected.

Like everyone else here, I'm a big Brian Wilson/Beach Boys fan. I even had the privilage of opening for the Beach Boys for two shows in the 60's. How cool that was - getting paid to open for the Beach Boys!

But if you're a Beach Boys fanatic, you should own "The Making Of Pet Sounds" - the multi-disc set, engineered by Mark Linnet. Amazing insights into the way Brian worked.

On a smaller note, I had the job of creating a "Beach Boys' type" commercial for an upcoming eBay spot. Not sure if it's gonna be local, regional, or national, but I had a lotta fun doing a "Help Me, Rhonda" sound-a-like track for the spot. I put a snippet up on the MP3 forum last year:

If you're into the Beach Boys, you might get a kick out of it. Sometimes, this job can really be fun.

I just picked up MIU, Carl and the Passions, L.A. and Holland yesterday. All albums I hadn't heard before. They're so good. The post-Pet Sounds stuff was just awesome.
