Hey guys.

The Situation
I have a vocalist in the family that can really wail on the blues/soul/gospel stuff. She wants to create a CD of her own songs plus a few with her vocals over some karaoke style soundtracks. Ideally we'd like to make the CD available on her web site and see what happens.

The Question
What's the deal on making this copyright-friendly for the pre-recorded soundtracks? How does one get permission or deal with "whomever" in order to use the soundtracks? Does it make a difference if we have a musician re-create the soundtracks? Any info is appreciated.

Thanks.

...ummm...
What's a mechanical license and who is Harry Fox?

It's correct to say that you will need a mechanical license to make duplicated copies available for sale of the compositions that are not your own.

However, just as important is that you obtain the permission of the owner of the 'Sound' copyright of the karaoke backing tracks.

If you were to commission a musician (and pay for the rights) to produce new backing tracks for you, you would then become the owner of those new 'Sound' recordings. But you will never own the copyright in the musical composition - which is why you need to contact Harry Fox for a mechanical license as well.

Any further questions - post 'em up!
