Perhaps I'm a little paranoid...

Which I am sharing in a narcissistic exercise.

Daughter went into the Navy and asked me to get her a laptop. Her budget was $1.5K.

Where laptops are concerned I'm a huge believer in warranties simply because the damn things break. So going in I had a preference for Dell because Dell is the only company of which I am aware that offers a four year long manufacturer's (as opposed to a third party) soup-to-nuts-we-don't-care-why-it-broke-we'll-fix-it warranty.

Started watching www.techbargains.com and as soon as a 33% discount showed up I went shopping.

Ended up with a Inspiron 1420 (14.1") 1440x990 display, 2GB memory, Core 2 Duo 7250 processor, 120GB HDD, Microsoft Works Plus, Windows Vista for about $1,200. The warranty was about 1/4th of that.

To help insure that the laptop would not grow legs I mandated that she invest in a Loc8tor Plus. I installed the RF tag inside of the laptop and as long as she has the Loc8tor on her and turned on the laptop won't go too far without letting her know. She's also getting a cable lock which I hope she uses every time she sets this puppy up.

It's a seriously nice laptop and I'd hate to see her lose it.

If you're investing $1200 in a portable and potentially fragile piece of electronics, it makes sense to be cautious.

Does the warranty cover theft?

How do I learn more about that Locator thing?

I got my Dell Laptop from their refurb section and they still gave me a warranty.

They do a LOT of dumb things, but in the end, they really do protect you.

Don't I just wish. If it did, it would have been 'stolen' already! :D:D:D

Loc8tor website. B&H website.

not to make you feel more paranoid though but here goes.. is there a way for the user to turn-off the infrared using the loca8r software on the laptop? does it work when laptop is turned off?

i am assuming the theft will be taking the laptop while it is turned-off and wont be browsing digg near your daughter's vicinity.
