THanks Salckmaster sorry for all the cross posts. :o I'm just a nevous newbie.

What is the difference between a pentium processor and an AMD K-6. I already have the latter. will this affect they way my soundcard and programs will run? They all list Pentium II as a system requirement. What sould I do?

Hmm...this is the third time I've said this today :)

Your K6 will work, just not as well. It will have little if any effect on your soundcard selection.

If your a fan of DX effects & processors, you'll really start to see the K6 start to saturate.

There is a difference in the floating point math.

I had the exact same question about a year ago. Basically what I learned is that for digital audio, the floating point math is essential! The floating point math with the AMD processors is not as good as the Pentium.

Isn't it true that the AMD Athlon chips have a superior way of handling floating point math. Hence they are faster than the Pentium III equivalent??

Hi Ryan,

It's a wintel world unfortuanatly.

When using obscure hardware like most people on the BBS.

Compatabity is the real issue. Intel chipsets are the drawing board for development. AMD and the companys hired to develop their chipsets are not too concerned about DAW. (not that intel is either, but it's a wintel world, again,)

It sucks, but that's the way it is.

The Athlon may very well work for you, and it is a superior processor. But choose every other component you build your sytem around.. very carefully.

It should be noted that while Athlons are superior, an Intel processor is just as adequate. You won't be dissapointed so don't sweat it.

Plus the higher clocked Athlons are more expensive than their Intel counterparts. The Intel 1Ghz processor for instance is $300 less than the 1Ghz Athlon (limited quantities still...of course)
