don't worry everyone, he just likes to correct people and wave his experience around. Every technical post i make he's on my butt trying to correct something i said....you don't always have to be right. there are people that can help you with this problem...

practice saying these hard phrases:

Pentiums are great, so are Athlons.

brzilian, if you have a computer engineering background, why do you buy prebuilt VPR systems?

I can build even a Pentium machine cheaper than what they sell for.

Anyway, the Athlon vs. Pentium argument is as old as the Mac vs. Windows argument, and both arguments are a heaping helping of Weak Sauce.

Well, I dont have a degree, I have about 20 years worth of experiance, which I'll take over a degree any day. And Ive built more AMD and Intel machines than you have probably seen in your lifetime, brzilian. People pay stupid amounts of money to get my opinion on hardware. No, AMD did not waste time puting into their chip a failsafe that is already built into damn near every motherboard on the face of the planet. And they dont melt down unless you PULL THE HEATSINK OFF OF THEM. Even if the fan stops, most of the time, it will get flakey and you'll notice weeks before it dies....That is if you dont have the software running that detects temp problems on your board, and if your worried about it you should. My AMD powered system stays up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and has for the last 5 years or so...I upgrade it a couple of times a year(so its not the same system, really), but that is as long as it is ever turned off. It doesnt fail, it doesnt melt down, and I run into zero compatability problems.

I've built AMD machines for many many many people, always with a decent fan, and NEVER EVER have i had an amd chip die because of a fan problem..even when the fan fails.

The AMD machines run faster, and are cheaper to build, and the reliability is excellant.

Just an anectodal contribution, but....


I have an Athlon 650 Classic (probably doesn't run nearly as hot as the faster XP's...), that the fan crapped out on during the summer in Phoenix, AZ in my studio space with no AC. Yes, the system got a little flaky and the heat sink was pretty damn hot when I opened the box to check things out. But, with a new fan it's good as new. No permanent damage.

I have not owned a descent modern day mobo that couldn't be setup to shut down at specified cpu temp. AMD or intel. But I think the vid is cool anyway.

I agree with other who say both are great products, the upper hand is given and taken back by these guys all the time, and they are different technologies to boot. A good cpu is easier to find than finding a good mobo. AMD makes sense to me and my wallet.
Every Intel fan is now talking hyperthreading, but real world applications are proving that this is not the greatest thing to hit the pavement , Although xp is hyper.... compatible some of the apps you run may not be then you hve to deal with app hogging and a decrease in performance, You don't get 2 cpu's for the price of one going this way, as hyperthreading pretends it's two cpu's .
A powerful dual MP would be nice. I look at it this way look at the dollar to mhz chart for intel and amd it will end up amd is cheaper and not an inferior product.

I totally agree. It is one thing to make a point forcefully but if one appears arrogant and defensive then one ALWAYS loses the argument.

Remember with some people "being right" is so necessary that it becomes pathological!

Wow, you must be one hell of a shrink to diagnose me when you have never once met me or know anything about me...

It truly makes me sick and somewhat sad that people have to revert to attacks on someones character like this. I may argue my point for the sake of arguing, but I NEVER have gone so far beyond the topic of a post as to insult someone's character. Muskgrave is just plain rude when it comes to any opnion I express and that he doesn't agree with. I have gone through past posts from him and he not only does this with me, but other posters on a couple occasions as well.

Criticize my points all you want, but don't ever attack me like that unless you have the guts to do it in person as well.

this whole thread is kinda lame

its like buying a jap car vs. a Euro car

they both do something equally well but the euro car is WAY more expensive because of trivial luxury features that have nothing to do with how well it drives on the road. if u want those luxury features get the Pentium, if u want the fastest processor for ya dollar u gotta go AMD simple as that

I think I got it:

- Athlon has better numeric coprocessor within it so it handles sound and graphics better than an P4.

- Athlon is cheaper than P4.

CAVEATS:

- Athlon needs correct chipset or it is picky with the chipsets.

- Athlon run's litterally hotter than a P4.

- Could be corrected by a fan - /could be noisy though/
- Difference in noise and 'danger' is negligible between the two processors.

So, I guess, all things being equal (since $50 to $100 price difference is not as important as to the stability requirement), to choose between the two chips is nothing more than academic and is an exercise in futility.

Could someone tell me, if I have using Cool Edit Pro, Vegas, Sonar or n-track, while recording 4 tracks simultaneously, all with effects (a little reverb here, a chorus there, an echo here, a limiter here on a few or each track), while playing back 4 additional tracks, which processor you think will hiccup less, the ATHLON XP or the PENTIUM 4? Or maybe I should try a stand alone HDR.
