This topic has been the subject of other threads, but, as a newcomer, I would appreciate some feedback on this set up. I am about to begin recording on my computer. I have Sound Forge XP, and a friend loaned me several mics to try before I buy. I also have use of a Peavey XR-700. If I use the Peavey, do I just plug it into the "line in" plug on the computer? (I assume I will need an adaptor with the proper size jacks) Basically, will this work, or will my computer blow up? Thanks a bunch for any and all thoughts and comments. To be more specific, the master output on the mixer has an impedence of 600 ohms. Will it be OK to run a line from this output into the "line in" on the computer?

Yes, you would likely want to connect from the Peavey to the LINE IN on the computer's soundcard. You can get the necessary adapter(s) from a Radio Shack or equivalent.

However, you will need to be VERY CAREFUL about which outputs from the Peavey you use. I'm assuming that the Peavey XR-700 is a powered mixer (i.e. it contains an amplifier)? If so, you'll want to avoid sending an AMPLIFIED signal from the Peavey into the computer's LINE IN. In other words, don't use the Peavey output(s) that would normally go directly to speakers or stage monitors -- those signals will likely be way too "hot" for the LINE IN to handle, and they could easily trash your soundcard! Check the Peavey manual or call their support line to find out whether the XR-700 has any "line level" outputs, and use only those. Examples might be called "line out", "stereo out", "tape out", "aux send", or even headphone outputs. Good luck!

Thanks a million for the help. You confirmed my suspicions about overloading thee sound card with too much power. I'll follow up your advice and let you know ow it goes.
