Ok so a friend of mine bought a 15wt Peavey viper, its a modeling amp. I'm trying to get feedback about this because he seems to think that its the greatest thing in the world and to me it just seems lame.
Well please feel free to be open and honest because its not my amp.

It's a practice amp for $100. Absolutely nothing of that nature is real good.

However ..... it's a decent practice amp which is more than many of that sort of amp manage to be.

As for modeling ..... a pretty common thing nowadays. Some players like it ...... some don't.

ive heard people compare it to the Vox VT range, and generally it doesnt come out on top in comparisons...but it is quite a bit cheaper

I have a VT15, the tones are pretty good and the valvetronix tech gives it a bit of overdrive

like Lt said, theyre just practise amps and not the end all...if you were going to record serious guitar work then theyd probably be pretty weak..Ive also heard the line 6 and didnt like it at all...Ive heard great things about Rolands micro cube

I guess what bugs me about this whole thing is that he does actually try and record with it using the aux output on the front of it as opposed to just mic'ing it. I mean hell he asked if he could borrow my sennheiser e609 and doesn't even use it.

well ...... he's learning ya' know?
I don't know how long you guys have been playing but I'm gonna guess he's in the early stages of playing and recording, and part of that is doing it different ways and some of them, the main thing you learn is they suck! lol

Don't get irritated ..... help him learn. Maybe set up a night ..... describe it as a recording session or maybe a testing session ..... come up with SOME kind of reason why you should record tracks both ways and then you can show him why mic'ing is generally better. Rather than tell him why he's wrong ..... make it a fun night that shows him the right way almost as an incidental part of the evening. That way it's not confrontational and he won't be so likely to dig his heels in ya' know?
If it's just a fun event he'll be open to hearing which is better.

I've even thought about recording some of his stuff, like you said both ways and I think that could very well work to "teach" him.
