How does Eddie Vedder get his vocals like that, it sounds sort of like their double tracked but its like each track is clear and not so stuck together, if you know what I mean. Its pretty hard to describe but a good example of a song that it is used on is "Breakerfall" off the Binaural album.

I haven't heard Binaural, but knowing Tchad Blake, it could be any one of lots of unusual techniques...check out the new Mix magazine or the interview with him in TapeOp a year or so ago for some of these off-the-wall tricks--singing through 2 long tubes and micing the other ends is one way he gets weird vocal sounds...

I'll go grab that CD and have a listen...I've got just about everything else Tchad's done, but just couldn't pull the trigger on giving PJ any $$$$...

OK, I'm listening to it...

It's a double-tracked vocal, one vox an octave lower than the lead vox, and very distorted--you can hear the low vox during the breakdown in the middle of the song...

For an example of what I think is the tubed vocals as mentioned in my previous post, check out "Of the Girl"...

Believe it or not, "Breakerfall" was actually sung through a fan into the mic (a Soundelux).
Pretty cool...

Was that to get an effect, or to make Eddie look like a rock star with wind blowing through his hair?

That's a cool tidbit Tuner, thanks. I'm sure the fan was blowing in Vedders face and not on the mic, but for reasons other than mentioned above. :D

I think Binaural is pretty cool. PJ's awsome. My favorite of the more recent albums is Yield. I dunno why. I think it flows better than the others, not as complete as Vitology to me but...
"Breakerfall" is an example of a distorted vocal sound that actually works- that is a rare thing indeed...
