I saw Mars had this Pearl Drum Set for sale.
Sorry, I don't know the modle number, but it had a natural mahogany finish. It included The kick, 3 toms and a snare. I think the sale price was about $800, marked down from about $1200.

Would this make the beginnings of a decent studio set? Or is it of crap-starter-toy caliber?

(No cymbals, no hardware)

You'll have to find out which line it is... but even the cheapest Pearl stuff is "decent" as far as I'm concerned. For $800, it should be pretty good. Price shop a little though to make sure its a good price, check www.musiciansfriend.com, ebay, etc.

The Pearl set you are considering is the Pearl Export. This is a decent mid-line kit - I consider an Export kit to be a "semi-pro kit" (not something for a headline national tour or an "A" list recording session, but a good kit for weekend club work and/or home recording).

Pearl exports are the largest selling drum kit made. The $800 price is about the going price. As you may know, Mars is currently in liquidation and I believe as of this weekend every thing is 10% off Mar's normal price. It is likely that the liquidation discounts will increase - but there is no way to be sure the kit will still be there.

If you need a kit and like the Export, $800 is a reasonable price - however, I would plan on replaceing the batter heads with something better (at least at some point)

Pearl Export

Export's are very decent for the money. I owned one back in the early 90's and have two friends who own a kit. I never recorded with mine but they have, I can tell you with good heads you can get great recordings from them.

Buy it, throw some good heads on it, learn how to tune properly and have fun!

is there a guitar center near you? they had pearl make them a custom kit with a nice fade (it's an export series too), killer hardware and just an overall killer set at about $699. if you're going for the one you saw online definitely look for the one at guitar center.

Thanks for all the info. I did go by GC and look at their kits. Prices seemed better.

I should have stated this first off, but I don't play drums, I don't even pretend to play drums. I'm not that coordinated! :p

What I'm looking for is a decent kit for a small recording studio. Something a seasoned player wouldn't turn his nose up at, but I don't want to spend $3000 either. So the Pearl Export, with some better heads might be a good choice?

when they bailed out of salt lake city all their drumsticks were $2/pair so I stocked up, vic firth, zildjian, vater, etc. I found what I like and what I would never use again really cheap!
