Yes, I fear this is a stupid question and that I should have know this before I ordered the sound card, but I figure I might as well ask the question. (Compared to some people I work with I'm not a complete moron with computers but obviously know very little about sound cards.)

I have an HP Pavilion Notebook PC. I Ordered a Sound Blaster X_Fi Elite Pro sound card. It never occurred to me (until I opened the box) that there was such a thing as a PCI slot on computers but not on notebook PCs. (I now see that they make sound cards for notebook PCs.)

So... is there such a thing as a stand alone box (adapter) that will route the sound card into my notebook or did I just waste $300.00? (I wonder if Creative Labs will take it back?)

they make a notebook version of those cards as well. but yeah, for pro audio recording they're absolute crap.

There is, but it's much more expensive than the soundcard:

And if you are doing serious recording, you don't really want that card anyway. I would try to return it, and look at USB or Firewire interfaces.

Wow. Those have come down a lot. Just a couple of years ago, you couldn't get a PCI chassis for under $1500 or so. Even at $1k, they don't make much sense for most people, though.
