PCI Slot?

I have an HP with 4 or 5 pci slots.

now heres the question-some of the the slots dont have the little peice where the card goes into, if you know what i mean, like the male card goes into the female adapter thing.

im just wondering what theyre for, they seem useless to me.

The femaile adapter thing is the pci slot. The holes without it are not.

The case is made to work with all kinds of different motherboards, that's why there are more places for PCI slots than there are PCI slots.
