quick (totally newbie) question requiring a "quick" answer
(a pending purchase is weighing on the answer)

i am looking to purchase either a E-MU 1212M or M-Audio Audiophile 192 PCI audio/midi interface

being that they don't have pre-amps can i use them with my midi keyboard and powered monitors and still get volume without a (microphone/mixer) pre-amp?

just need a quick yes or no answer, if you "know" and would PLEASE be so kind to provide one since you're reading this, it would just take a moment

thanks in advance for your consideration and feedback this matter

Count yourself lucky to get any responses in the future - self-entitled little kids are generally ignored. No one owes you a response, but I'm in a generous mood today, so count yerself lucky.

The pre-amps on a soundcard are microphone preamps and have nothing to do with output levels (speakers) or line-level inputs such as your keyboard.

They'll only be required should you want to use a microphone to record something.

thank you fraserhutch for your straightforward response

i fully understand that i'm not "owed" a response, but anticipating one on a "forum" doesn't make me a "self-entitled child"

i made it clear that a sale was pending on a quick "yes" or "no" answer, so there was some urgency on my part, shame on me

but... i'm afraid i just don't understand the nature of a "forum" were 25 or 30 individuals read a post and can't take the five or ten seconds it takes to state "yes" it'll work or "no" it won't

i liken it as going to a town hall meeting where no discussion takes place

your answer was just what i needed and much appreciated

thank you

Maybe they didnt know the answer? The number of relative noobies (myself included :D) on this forum far outweighs the number of experienced engineers.

Normally, sound card questions relating to specific equipment gets a lower response count then more generic and "fun" questions.

Hopefully the equipment you ordered works :) Let us know if you want any more help.

waffleness

i don't mean to be the squeaky wheel getting the oil

i did purchase the M-Audio Audiophile 192

after some research i became convinced that my volume concern was logically tied to the microphone pre-amps

however, i came from a E-MU 0404/USB which had pre-amps and microphone/hi-z/line-in Neutrik inputs

i plugged the line outs of my Roland Juno-D into these and it seemed like i had some gain control there

as well, the unit had direct monitoring with a dedicated volume control

my Audiophile 192 shows up today, so i'll see if i get the same volumes levels as before

if not i'll either get pre-amp (say the M-Audio DMP3) or a mixer (say the Soundcraft compact 4)

either of those should get my gain levels back up
