Dude, you're going to jail!
From what I've seen, that is true. If you want a computer that does little more than run Internet Explorer and MS Word, Dell can hook you up for about $300.

However, if you want a computer that does anything really cool, it's still most fun to build your own. Or you can buy a cheap Dell and then void its warranty by adding all the fun extras (like a floppy drive).

I agree completely. Sure I just spent $1500 on the parts for my new computer....but I got EXACTLY what I wanted with no compromises.

a cannabalize my old computers and upgrade the motherboard, cpu, ps, and ram...
spent around $400 last time...

plus its always rackmounted-sweetness

It's sad that people get suckered into buying a cheap pre-built computer. It makes it hard to run a buisness building PC's. Most people all they see is the price.

Sometimes those Dell deals are crazy good, though. I don't regret the mid-end Dell that I got for 1000 dollars. 3 years ago. With an 18" LCD monitor included! (I'm still using that monitor.) The cheap CHEAP ones, which have such wonderful things as NO AGP or PCI-Express for a dedicated video card, or even not accepting anything but half height PCI cards...I wouldn't touch those with a pole.

Nowadays, it strikes me as a bit on the noisy side...but still totally usable. It's still my primary sound machine (with an E-mu 1820 instead of an M-Audio in it). Still has the old P4 2.4, long since maxed out the memory with 2 gigs of RAM (the limitation that I need to break with my next major computer upgrade).

Sklathill, which Dell is that if you don't mind me asking? I've got one that (according to Dell) can only take up to 1 GB of RAM, but I had found some RAM on another website that claimed I could use up to 2 GB in the same machine.
