I`m planning to buy some equiptment for home recording and would like to get a handle on which would be better,a pc system or hard disk recorder.I know this subject is open to a lot of debate but I would really appreciate any advice on what pitfalls I may encounter with each of these methods. Also any advice on what type of computer & soundcard or hard disk recorder would be greatly appreciated.I have good mics and an ok monitor setup and would like to spend between 1500 and 2500 dollars, thanks Banjoal

First, be specific on all the mics/gear/instruments you have...

Is portability an issue?
Are you a 1man or band?
What instruments will u be recording?
How many at one time?
Do u want to mix on a mixer or in software?
Do you want commercial quality, demo quality, project studio quality, just decent quality?

what kind of computer do you already have?? buying a hd recorder is like buying another computer...that would be a waste if you could use the one you already have.
i opted for pc and soundcard myself...it gives you more flexibility.

You can upgrade you pc

If you are talking about pc or a all in one workstation I would go PC. I built a PC just for recording and I am very pleased. I went with high end stuff and It will last me a life time for the most part.
A portable workstation may be better if you have no mixing board but what you get is what you will always have. I can add memorey, a new chip or new programing. I can record at beyond CD quality and can patch into any outboard gear I wish. Including ADAT or MIDI. The thing I like best is that I can modify and update things as I like and I've got a real usable visual interface (minitor).

Don't forget about the fact that you can convert to MP3 or what ever comes down the line next. MP4?

Any way if you have any questions feel free.
